NON
CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SUN
ALBUM MUTE, PLAYGROUND RELEASE: AUGUST 26, 2002 REVIEW: AUGUST 28, 2002

On “Children of the Black Sun”, Boyd Rice aka Non has embarked on a somewhat more mellow route than he’s known for. Opening track “Arka” is a multifaceted, orchestral piece, but the rest of the album mainly consists of murky, grey drones. The foghorn roar of “Black Sun” could possibly have belonged to The Velvet Underground, but in this context it soon grows a bit tedious. The same can be said for most of the album. Occasionally, Rice builds up a pleasantly unpleasant atmosphere, but most of the time “Children of the Black Sun” is neither intimidating nor very challenging. Just rather dull.
