New singles every 13th from the Cure May 6, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA) Long standing merchants of mope, The Cure, will put out four new singles every month on the thirteenth up until the release of their new album on September - ehem - thirteenth. You may be wondering, why the timing? It is the band's thirteenth album and will be further supported by a US tour which commences on May 9 and concludes on June 21. We have heard the first single "The Only One" and can surmise it sounds like "Wish"-era Cure meets the rather disappointing sound of their 2004 album entitled "The Cure". Be assured, all four singles will be available in both physical and digital formats, they also will include one B-side per single also; devilish marketing, to be sure. Did we mention the new album still has no title? Well, there we said it. Insofar as plans to continue the re-issues of their previous albums, the band have said not a word. Neubauten hand out their "Jewels" May 5, 2008 | By: Mattias Huss (Uppsala/Stockholm, Sweden)
Previously available only as a gift to the supporters of Einstürzende Neubauten's third subscription phase, "Jewels" will be released to the public on May 13 (and has already been on sale at venues of the ongoing tour). The songs have been recorded using the band's own Dave card system (read more about it here) demonstrated during some of the recent concerts and the lyrics are based on the dreams of Blixa Bargeld. The songs are much more experimental than anything on "Alles Wieder Offen". The release of "Jewels" seems to defy an earlier statement that it would not be made available in any other form outside the supporter project. New uptempo NIN full length album available for free May 5, 2008 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden) After the successful release of "Ghosts" a while ago, Trent Reznor has made a complete album available on www.nin.com. It's called "The Slip" and is an uptempo, guitary affair. According to a post on the site, it's a thank you to all the support Trent got from the fans. Respect. It seems like Trent is having the time of his life, making more music than ever before. Release favourites Syntax reborn May 2, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)
We just gleaned this from the band's Myspace, a rather cryptic note which informs us that Release favourite Syntax are working on a new album with a late 2008 release planned for it. Syntax, of course, should be quite familiar to Release readers as their debut garnered one of the few tens we have ever given a record. For those who have been living under a rock, Syntax contains one member of the UK's legendary Fluke who are themselves known these days as 2 Bit Pie. Further news as we get it. Prosumer electronic music in May Apr 29, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)
- It will be packed with tons of electronics; a claustrophobic, uncompromising product, the band says. Further details can be found at the band's website, which also serves in part as the only place to purchase their wares. Release has reviewed both their 2004 double album return "Wellcome" and 2006's triumph "Filthy White Guy" quite favourably. "Slug" review in progress. Their first new single in eight years, a catchy crowdpleaser called "Shonen Young", is accompanied by a fabulous and decidedly 80:s-flavoured video available on You Tube. March wouldn't be March without the build up of anticipation for the summer festivals; and we aren't disappointed, with the initial line-up released for Sonar 2008. As you probably already know, Sonar is held in Barcelona, Spain, and is quite probably Europe's premier electronica and dance festival. It has also has more than a cursory eye for the experimental too, something which always gives the artist line-up that little bit of excitement that draws people to the festival year after year. As it goes, this could be one of the most exciting years yet, with these artists already confirmed: Antipop Consortium, Frankie Knuckles, Goldfrapp, M.I.A., Miss Kitten, Yazoo, Roisin Murphy, Yelle, and DJ Scotch Egg – some highlights from the many, many acts that are due to perform. There are also a host of acts recently confirmed too, and more awaiting confirmation – Leila, Madness and Kid Acne being recent additions to the festival roster. As always, the line-up throws up special performances not anticipated or even believed possible to happen. Both Antipop Consortium and Yazoo reform in time for the festival, while some of the most cutting edge performers at the moment, such as DJ Scotch Egg and M.I.A., add a whole new dimension to the proceedings. Goldfrapp and Miss Kitten also provide some of the glamour and popularity which will no doubt pack in the crowds. As always, tickets and information on the whole line up is available via the Sonar festival website – www.sonar.es – and don’t forget those important festival dates: June 19 to 21.
