Sturm Café is open again

March 2, 2010 | By: Tobias Eliasson (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Sturm Café live in Gothenburg 2009.
Photo by: Fredrik "Schlatta" Svensson (Release)

The Swedish EBM-act Sturm Café consisting of Jonatan Löfstedt and Gustav Jansson called it quits in April 2009, just when it seemed it was time for a new album after “So seelish, so schön!” from 2005. They did two farewell shows, one in Sweden and one in Germany where they have a big fanbase.

This however didn’t last a year, because now the band have returned and the result is “Koka Kola Freiheit”, a 7” single limited to 200 copies on their own Sturm Café Records. We contacted Gustav to find out what happened.

– Jonatan and me have continued to be good friends, and one day we went into the studio just to play around, without any demands. The result of that became “Koka Kola Freiheit”. It felt vital and fresh; so we decided to start again.

You have left Progress Productions and started your own label instead.

– We wanted to try something new, run everything ourselves and have 100% control. Progress was really good for us, and they have helped us a lot during these years, but in combination with the restart we felt that this was the natural step.

What are your future plans?

– Well, we really don’t want to plan too much ahead; we want everything to be spontaneous and free. But I wouldn’t be surprised if we have one or two more releases in 2010.
