YELLO
THE EYE
ALBUM UNIVERSAL RELEASE: NOVEMBER 11, 2003 REVIEW: FEBRUARY 4, 2004

"The Eye" opens and ends with the fantastic “Planet Dada” – electronic, spastic, funny and innovative all at the same time. Dieter Meier and Boris Blank have been at it for quite some time now, and I’m glad they can still produce music that puts a grin to my face. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn’t live up to this standard. Many songs sound exactly like Yello, if you catch my drift… Lots of percussion, samba or bossanova rhythms, Dieter talking quickly. If you’re a fan like me, you know what I mean. You probably also like it, and don’t think it’s that big of a problem. Some variation can be found in the form of more technoid beats and sequences, female vocals and so on, but my main gripe with the album is that I can’t remember any of the songs after I turn the CD player off. In short, this won’t bring them many new fans, but will probably keep the old ones.
