SPETSNAZ
TOTALITÄR

ALBUM SSC RELEASE: FEBRUARY 8, 2006 REVIEW: FEBRUARY 16, 2006

EBM and military allusions have always gone hand in hand. Of course a band named Spetsnaz won’t be seen left out, so on this new album we got song titles like “Uniform”, “Warfare Inc”, “Formation” and also the title song “Totalitär” (meaning totalitarian). However, I have a feeling that the lads Stefan and Pontus don’t take it too seriously.

After a short intro, things kick off with a bang via the mentioned “Uniform”, a supremely bouncy number that is very yummy. Pontus still performs his Douglas McCarthy impression to good effect, and the music is crisp, fast and heavy. This goes for the entire album actually, except in “Kindred” where the singing takes on a softer facet.

Spetsnaz have prepped their synthesizers with even more fat, springy bass sounds, employed with skill and finesse. Unfortunately the album as a whole lacks dynamics. All songs are pretty similar in style and pace. “Totalitär” is the perfect party album though, and I know you will capitulate too.
