SLICK SIXTY
NIBS AND NABS
ALBUM MUTE RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 13, 1999 REVIEW: SEPTEMBER 29, 1999

Slick Sixty could have been Englands answer to Beck (although I guess Scott 4 already is that, at least sort of). They do know how to make a beat swing, and they mix in harmonicas, scratching and brass in their songs. But they've missed one important aspect: the never resting inspiration that fuels Beck's best works. In "Someone Else's Square" they're absolutely right - it's a fabulous tune with beautiful melodies that actually send shivers down my spine. But most of the tracks are way to unimaginative to get by without vocals, and on top of that often last for over five minutes. And, honestly, how exciting is it with three English guys making instrumental hip hop? They ought to find themselves an angry black MC and get down to business for real.
Still, kind of groovy. At least in small doses.
