MIND.IN.A.BOX
LOST ALONE
ALBUM DEPENDENT (EUROPE), METROPOLIS (USA) RELEASE: JUNE 1, 2004 REVIEW: JUNE 18, 2004

The name Mind.in.a.box might sound like a poor imitation of Cut.rate.box, but this German debutant sounds different. Dark, epic song structures and peculiar, processed vocals mixed with techno rhythms is what this is all about. Some futurepop elements are included, but this is not your standard fare. I quite like the album, although it has no real highs or lows, rather it kind of stays in the middle ground all the time, which is a shame. The songs miss memorable hooks. I get the feeling Mind.in.a.box would want to have the hooks – at least in some songs – and this means that they have failed somewhat.
However, they succeed in making an impressive atmosphere, and the production is flawless, with cosy strings, heavy beats and deep rumbling bass lines. If the band manages to make some stronger songs next time, we should be in for a real treat.
