CRYO
MIXED EMOTIONS

EP PROGRESS, BORDER RELEASE: NOVEMBER 14, 2007 REVIEW: DECEMBER 4, 2007

After Martin Rudefelt's impressive debut with last year’s “Cryogenic” and being voted “Newcomer of the Year” at the Scandinavian Alternative Music Awards, we are now treated to “Mixed Emotions” from one-man project Cryo. I really liked the cold EBM presented on the album. He managed to combine the feeling of classic EBM with a dark mood but still kept it danceable while mixing it with slightly more relaxed and epic songs.

This EP is aimed at the dance floor and contains just about everything you expect; a couple of new songs, some remixes and a cover. The new tracks stay close to the sound from the album; it’s cold, powerful and really good. The slower side of Cryo comes through in the original version of “Inhale/Exhale”, but apart from that the songs on the EP make you want to jump into your boots and disappear into the smoke filled floor on your favorite club. I especially like “Go to War” which starts off slow, building the mood with some nice samples, transforming into cold EBM and then exploding into melodies in the chorus. A perfect example of how talented Martin Rudefelt is when it comes to writing songs.

The remixes are good, especially the one from traKKtor. The cover of Front 242’s “Body to Body” is quite close to the original; a nice tribute to a group which has served as a huge inspiration for Cryo.

"Mixed Emotions" is a high quality EP but I miss the variation in the songs that was on the album “Cryogenic”.
