APOPTYGMA BERZERK
YOU AND ME AGAINST THE WORLD
ALBUM RCA, SONY BMG RELEASE: SEPTEMBER 21, 2005 REVIEW: SEPTEMBER 30, 2005

I believe Stephan Groth has always wanted to make pop music. His electronic compositions have been blessed by a well developed sense for melodies, that in my opinion has lifted them over the crowd. However, I wasn’t really expecting this total change in sound. With the live guitarist Anders Odden back in the band full time, they have expanded into a full on radio friendly rock act, not that far from HIM. I know many people will hate this, and it’s a very brave (or stupid?) move to try to go from subculture to mainstream in such a blatant way.

Luckily then, that some tracks are absolutely wonderful! “Back on Track” for example, is on constant repeat in my apartment, as it’s a furiously charming song that I just can’t seem to get enough of. “Maze” is another gem, and the Kim Wilde cover “Cambodia” is delightful. These tracks are the cream of the crop, together with the single “In This Together”, which I also enjoy immensely. Alas, the rest of the songs are a bit uneven, and while some are good, they do not reach the same heights.

All tracks still have an underlying electronic base, often with synthetic noises embellishing the sound, or making the foundation. They haven’t completely joined the dark side…

So, there you have it. Stephan has finally made his pop album, and lots of people will hate them for releasing this record. Me, however, love some of the songs on here. Give it a try before you tear it apart.
