Rome change style into raw industrial

May 26, 2011 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Rome are back after their break and have decided to change their sound from their recent chanson noir into a more raw, harsh industrial (at least for now), which is somewhat closer to how this Luxemburg outfit sounded on their first albums.

A trilogy called "Die Ästhetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit" is in the making. The first taste if what's to come is the new 10" vinyl "Our Holy Rue" (limited to 999 copies), with tracks from the new album "A Cross of Wheat".

A reissue of the classic album "Masse Mensch Material" is also here.

Rome have played in 15 countries in the past, and schedule 2011 concerts as we speak in Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Romania and Russia. Stops at the Wave Gotik Treffen, Summer Darkness and Amphi festivals are already set.

On May 12 to 15 the annual Short Circuit festival was held at the Roundhouse in Camden, London, UK. Two of these days were devoted to legendary Mute Records. Speculation on which of the label’s artist would be performing started last autumn and when the final program was revealed, speculations regarding the appearance of Depeche Mode boomed. This was not to be. Instead we were treated by spectacular performances by Recoil, Nitzer Ebb, Non, Carter Tutti and Nik Void on Friday night, including DJ sets by Richie Hawtin, Moby and Mute founder Daniel Miller amongst others. Recoil and Nitzer Ebb performed a special version "Personal Jesus" together.

The Saturday events begun with a talk by no one less than Gareth Jones, producer of numerous Mute artist and generally a very nice guy. The organization left somewhat to be desired since the number of people allowed in the conference rooms was limited to 80, which meant that even many of the people buying premium tickets to gain priority to some festival events were left outside. The day progressed with a fantastic insight to the crafting and artistry of some songs produced by Flood.

The artists performing live on Saturday included Liars, The Residents, new Mute signing Beth Jeans Houghton, Laibach ending their set with a glorious cover of "Warm Leatherette", and my personal highlight of the festival: Erasure with special guests Alison Moyet, performing three Yazoo songs and Feargal Sharkey performing "Never Never". Also Andy Fletcher DJ:ing, mostly chart tracks and Martin Gore finished the general festival with an upbeat and energetic DJ set. For the premium ticket holders there was chance of see Daniel Miller again DJ:ing at the Studio Theatre, followed by Rex the Dog giving the best DJ set of the entire festival.
