Glitch pop from Cumbria

July 13, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)

Barking at Butterflies, the newest project of Jonathan Sharp (New Mind, Gunhed, Hexedene, Vent) will release their debut EP "Disappear with the Stars" on July 28. This band is a far cry from the aforementioned musical output of Mr. Sharp and may surprise quite a few of you. I-tunes currently has the EP in stock as do several other digital vendors. If you'd like to hear more about this latest endeavor, check out the official Barking at Butterflies MySpace for further details.

Double album retrospective from Phil Western

July 13, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)

"Dat Hell" (The Record Company) has just been released and is a two disc set of collected unreleased works from Mr. Western and friends spanning the years 1988 to 2003. If experimental techno/electro/ambient excursions are your forte, look into this release quickly as only 300 copies have been made and are selling down rapidly.

A more fitting repast of minimal electronic music could not have come at a timelier moment. Further proof of just how potent and timeless the avant garde scene in Vancouver BC was during those years. The cast of characters should be quite familiar to fans of Western's work: Tim Hill, Dan Handrabur and Dwayne Goettel all feature prominently as contributors to these works. Part guerilla DIY fringe production and part final frontier, "Dat Hell" is available only from Western's site.

The Swedish Arvika Festival didn’t manage to sell out this year, but they were able to set a new record with 18000 tickets sold. Despite a quite weak line-up, bands like And One, Kent and S.P.O.C.K all played great shows.

The festival was reported as calm, without any big incidents. However the Apollo tent was evacuated right before the concert with Alice in Videoland due to the insane amount of rain pouring down over the area on a brief moment the last day.

You can read more about the festival in our upcoming report.

Murmurings from Luton

July 6, 2008 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)

One of Sheffield, England's oldest sons, Click Click, have just announced on their MySpace plans for a re-issuing of their back catalogue via... wait for it... Dependent Records. Now this may come as a bit of a surprise given the rather public closure of that record label last year but apparently, Stefan Herwig has plans for these UK veterans. In the 90:s, Dependent's forerunner, Offbeat issued the band's 1997 album "Shadowblack", a most filmic and adventurously dark record.

One of the Smith brothers (who are the core of Click Click), Adrian, has also released several albums under the name Paperhouse, which continue in the trip hop/d'n'b/eclectic vein of "Shadowblack". The band themselves issued a new album "Husk" last year and have made numerous studio recordings available through their own record label, Rotor Babe.

Known chiefly for their singles "Yakutska" and "I Rage I Melt" in the late 80:s, Click Click imploded in 1989 before returning to release the afore-mentioned "Shadowblack" in 1997 and have been quasi-active ever since.

Unreleased Amorphous Androgynous album gets FSOL release

July 3, 2008 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans recorded the album "Environments" in 1994 as an Amorphous Androgynous album, but they never got around to releasing it. Becoming the fans' holy grail, it was unreleased until it was remastered in 2007 and released digitally under the Future Sound of London name on fsoldigital.com a couple of months ago. Now it's time for a CD release, in July.

Also, having scoured the net for info, I learned that there is a brand new FSOL release coming up, and they're going for the electronic style again. Brian has said online that "it's going to be a killer".

New Delerium material with new member

July 1, 2008 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

According to a recent interview with UK's Alternative Magazine, Bill Leeb is working on new Delerium material together with fellow Front Line Assembly member Jeremy Inkel. Rhys Fulber is no longer in the picture, so Jeremy stepped in to fill his shoes. Bill claims that he doesn't care if Delerium's played on the radio or not, so now they will just do what they want. Apparently, it sounds like "Leftfield meets Massive Attack". There's no info regarding release date or title.

Stirrings from Brendan Perry

July 1, 2008 | By: Mattias Huss (Uppsala/Stockholm, Sweden)

No new album has surfaced from the less prolific half of former Dead Can Dance since the brilliant "Eye of the Hunter" in 1999, but the wait will soon be over. Several songs for the forthcoming album on 4AD can be heard on his Myspace page, though Brendan Perry thinks the album probably won't be out sooner than the end of 2008.

The new album will apparently differ quite a lot from the previous one in featuring rhythm machines and electric guitars, but songs like "Utopia" exhibit all the lushness and grandeur we've come to expect from Perry.
