Different electronic styles from Israel

September 28 2005 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden)

Infected Mushroom.

The label BNE has just brought us a bit of new insight into Israeli electronic music. First in the form of a compilation album called “Life is… Dimensions”, featuring a host of Israeli artists covering a lot of different styles. No psy-trance though, which is Israel 's biggest musical export; instead it's more of a chill-out album.

The psy-trance instead comes from Infected Mushroom, who's EP “Stretched” contains material from their last album “Supervisor”, as well as new material. Both discs are out now.

Spotlight tip: Mattias Huss' interview with Israeli stars Astral Projection, "The politics of trance".

Pig turns "Pigmartyr" into "Pigmata"

September 22 2005 | By: Kristoffer Noheden (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Last year, Raymond Watts abandoned his Pig moniker for the seemingly shortlived project Watts. The outcome was the album “Pigmartyr” (Grand Recordings), which was a more stripped down and metal-leaning effort than the ordinary bombastic Pig sound.

The album suffered from problems with mixing and mastering as well as poor distribution, things that will hopefully get corrected now as Watts gets turned into Pig again and “Pigmartyr” becomes “Pigmata”. Metropolis is namely issuing a new version with three bonus tracks, that has also been remastered by Isaac Glendening of Cesium_137.

“Pigmata” will be out on November 8.

Goldfrapp remix Depeche Mode again

September 22 2005 | By: Johan Carlsson (Stockholm, Sweden) and Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Goldfrapp's “Halo” remix (featuring additional vocals by Alison Goldfrapp) on the Depeche Mode “Remixes 81-04” album was a band favourite, and apparently Goldfrapp has been chosen again to remix a song from the upcoming album “Playing the Angel”. There's no word on which one, but perhaps its is the next, rather odd, single “A Pain That I'm Used To”?

Goldfrapp's third album "Supernature" is out now (and spinning at the Release office, we might add).

The song “Throw” will feature on Dan's upcoming album “Escape from Planet Monday” which is out next year. Pet Shop Boys worked with him on the PSB single “Miracles”, which Dan co-produced.

Leæther Strip EP in October

September 21 2005 | By: Mikael Kahrle (Gothenburg)

We were expecting a Leæther Strip comeback CD, but not this soon.

The seven track EP "Suicide Bombers" will be released in a little more than a month, on October 28, and holds two versions of the title song (including a "real" 12" version) and five more new songs.

- The lyrics are as personal as they ever were and I wanted to stay true to my older work, Claus Larsen says and continues:

- It was about time I got out of my dark hole and start my dear old friend Leæther Strip up. It wasn't really fair to him to just leave him in the ruins like an old car after all he gave me...

Release attended Dead Can Dance US premiere

September 20 2005 | By: Peter Marks (Portland, Oregon, USA)

After a nine-year absence from the stage - and each other, Australian/Irish duo Dead Can Dance are currently on tour this year. They played Europe in March and April. September 17 and 18 marked the first dates of the North American leg of their world tour in Seattle, Washington at the Paramount Theatre; Release was in attendance for September 17.

Several new songs were debuted for the riveted audience as well as classics like "Severance" and the This Mortal Coil contribution from Dead Can Dance "Dreams Made Flesh". Surprisingly, numerous tracks from their 1993 breakthrough album "Into the Labyrinth" featured strongly in the set, although they were balanced by a rare airing of "Black Sun" from 1990's "Aion" as well as several new pieces from Lisa Gerrard which drew rapturous applause. Three encores were delivered.

Both shows were recorded (as have all the concerts on this tour) and were made available to audience members. A voucher system has been devised by the band by which one enters the code on said voucher at the web site to redeem their copy.

No plans exist for a new studio album from Dead Can Dance at this time.

In other news, Lisa Gerrard has released yet another film score, for the movie "A Thousand Roads". She has previously scored "Gladiator", "Whale Rider", "The Insider", "Ali" and "Layer Cake", amongst others.

Further details of her future plans can be found on her web site.

Him alights with new album

September 16 2005 | By: Mattias Huss (Turku, Finland)

The new and by all accounts power hungry stadium rock effort of Finnish gloom-glam rockers Him is called "Dark Light" and bestows its ebony rays on us come September 26 (27 in USA). In the Finnish press, Ville Valo describes the CD variously as being Him's "purple album", an album with a pope theme, or the album with Dali's moustache - as opposed to "Love Metal" which sported Tom Selleck's. Go figure...

Recorded in a luxurious LA mansion usually populated by movie stars and Playboy playmates, and mixed in Jimi Hendrix former studio in New York, "Dark Light" signals Him's rise to top celebrity status.

Will the album justify such grand gestures? We'll know soon enough. The single "Wings of a Butterfly" is already out. This and more can be heard at Him's MySpace page.
